The Science of Getting Rich
by Wallace D. Wattles

Timeless wisdom and a practical, step-by-step prosperity program from a forgotten 1910 classic ...
With a new introduction by Rebecca Fine

You already have within you everything you need to turn your dreams into reality. You are a person of infinite worth and unique possibility. Even if you don’t think of yourself as a creative person, and even if you’ve failed before, and even if you think you’ve tried everything, open your mind to this book.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” That has certainly held true for me and many, many others, and perhaps you’re ready, too — right now. If you’re not yet where you want to be in terms of income and your own personal success, the problem may not be what you’re doing so much as how you’re doing it. And that begins with how you think.

If you want to change your life, you may just need to change your mind!

Steve Dodson says:

Unfortunately, this book is nothing else but a semireligious book with a massive selection of circular arguments in business jargon. Since I don't use profanities, let me just say that I buried it in my garden next to my potatoes in the hope that they will grow better.
A generalized example of these circular arguments: if you want a red car you should never get a green car, because a green car can never be a red car. Only if the car you select is red, will it be a red car, because then you will not have selected a green car. Some people may believe that a green car can be a red car, but you cannot have a red car if it is green. The green in the car will always be green and not red. Evolution has shown that a fox is red, not green, proving beyond all doubt that what you must select is the red car... and so on, ad infinitum.

Science NEVER relies on belief alone, yet that is what this book asks you to do, with lots of references to "the original stuff, the thinking formless substance"=god, and a lot of bible quotes.
Sorry, but I can't recommend this book to anyone, except as an example of how to write selfevident gobbledigook.

I will shorten the whole contents of the book into one short line: do what you can do, as well as you can do it, with the resources you have.

Hi Steve ...

Thanks for your comments!
All are genuinely welcome whether negative or positive ... and you well, definitely don't like it - fair enough I say! But, a few things ...

"semireligious" ... Well many people would say that is a positive thing. Also, remember, this book was written in 1910, in a different time. The manner of the writing will be different, targeting a different reader who most probably, then, would more likely be more devout than we are now.

"circular arguments" ... People often (generalisation) aim and strive for something, a goal (a red car). Some people get enamoured by something similar to what they were aiming for ( a green car), and stop their journey, and on first feelings believe themselves to be content, satisfied. A while later, they realise that their green car isn't the red car they were striving for, and feel disappointed.

Was the normal reader back in 1910 unable to comprehend more evolved metaphors, is the writing style/language too simple? Perhaps, but it's often in the simplest message (confusing the conscious maybe yes), that the strongest message comes through.

"Science never relies on belief alone" ... What part of science? The first spark of an idea often relies on imagination, belief, trust, and yes, knowledge. Einstein developed his theory of relativity while imagining what would happen if he was running next to a beam of light and considering what he would see. His belief in what he thought he knew allowed him, gave him the strength to calculate the science behind his belief.

"bible quotes" ... Personally, I admit to not being religious in a Western sense of the understanding. Having said that, there are some good words in that book - good metaphors to help people understand better. (We'll leave aside all the tampering and altering that the Bible went through over 1000 years!). Just because a work has references to religion does not de-value it (or, give it extra value).

"do what you can do, as well as you can do it, with the resources you have" ... You know ... many people don't have that message in them-selves. It's fine and easy for us to comment how naive, how simplistic something is, on the basis of our own understandings. There are many people with different understandings, for who, this book would turn on a bulb in their minds ... I don't choose to believe that what I understand is the same as what others choose to understand. We are all different and beautiful ... and that's the way it is and should be.

Take care,

Vic Carrara
