The Art of Money Getting or Golden Rules for Making Money

You may remember P. T. Barnum as that great showman, and as the person who coined the phrase "There’s a sucker born every minute" (though he didn't!). But his roller coaster ride of success and failure, building and loosing several fortunes during his lifetime makes the lessons he shares in his book "The Art of MoneyGetting" even more valuable.
Barnum was born in Bethel, Connecticut, the son of an inn-and store-keeper. He first started out in the family business, becoming a store-keeper himself. This turned out not to be for him and in 1829 he turned his hand to publishing, starting a weekly newspaper 'The Herald of Freedom'. His version of freedom of speech was a bit too 'free', and after several libel suits and a prosecution which resulted in imprisonment, he moved to New York City in 1834. Then, in 1835 he began the career for which we know him the best, as a showman, by buying an exhibition of a blind and almost completely paralyzed African-American slave woman, Joice Heth, claimed by Barnum to have been the nurse of George Washington, and to be over a hundred and sixty years old.
Over the next 53 years, Barnum built, lost and rebuilt some of the 'greatest shows on earth' including Barnum's American Museum, a touring exhibition of Charles Stratton, the celebrated midget "General Tom Thumb", and "P. T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth".
He wrote several books (including many versions of his autobiography), including the "Art of Money Getting" to share the golden rules he had discoveed and used so effectively for making money.
As in so many areas of life learning, certain methodologies and recommendations remain timeless, and maintain their relevance no matter their age. All the self help, motivational, positive thinking books are in essense reprints ... re-expressing what came before in a diferent way. As it is with this book. Success is the result of effort, and as always, it is how you choose to direct your effort that will either deliver or fail to deliver the outcomes you seek ... from Chapter 5:
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO IT WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT
Work at it, if necessary, early and late, in season and out of season, not leaving a stone unturned, and never deferring for a single hour that which can be done just as well now. The old proverb is full of truth and meaning, "Whatever is worth doing at all, is worth doing well." Many a man acquires a fortune by doing his business thoroughly, while his neighbor remains poor for life, because he only half does it. Ambition, energy, industry, perseverance, are indispensable requisites for success in business.

There are many lessons to be enjoyed in this book. It's one of those books that you can flick open when you need a nudge, and some kind of answer will appear on whatever page opens. I like those kind of books ...I hope you will too ...
